Mead Making

This workshop will explore the art and science of making mead.  We will discuss varieties of honey, basic techniques, recipes, equipment and ingredients for various meads, melomels and metheglins.  We will taste some honeys to discover the wide range of flavors in this vital ingredient.  We will explore how your choice of honey, yeast and other flavorings can enhance the flavor of this fermented nectar.  At the end of the workshop Ben will demonstrate a simple mead recipe and will answer questions, so bring your mead related questions.  NO MEAD OR ANY ALCOHOL WILL BE SERVED AT THIS WORKSHOP.

Facilitated by Ben Staff

Ben Starr has made more than 150 gallons of mead and countless varieties from Spiced Apple to Bell Pepper.  Ben and Becky Starr will be opening a commercial meadery, Starrlight Mead,  in the fall of this year in Pittsboro.  They have won several awards for their meads, including Best in Show at the International Mead Festival.  Ben has also taught mead making for 4 years at Carolina Spirit Quest’s spring event.
